Bob Blake and The Valparaiso D&D Society

Bob Blake is a very well noted Gen Con personality. He was in charge of the Official AD&D Open Tournament for many years from D&D's earliest presence with the shift from wargaming to fantasy role playing at Gen Con tournaments. TSR used a couple of Bob Blake's dungeon designs for both the Gen Con IX and Gen Con X. This should be considered somewhat unusual as TSR was play testing and releasing the pre published copies of some of their most commonly known modules at other tournaments from the same time period. These tournaments (Origins and Wintercon/Michicon) were not even their own like Gen Con was. At any rate, these two Official Tournament modules were printed by Bob Blake with expressed permission of TSR. Granted the quality of publication was very weak by TSR standards so it is difficult to be sure if TSR opted out rolling these adventures into TSR print. Both of these modules did wind up being printed by Judges Guild and sold in rather large quantities so they are far more common than the original tournament prints/early editions. It is also unclear if these were sold at the tournaments or otherwise. Any more information would be greatly appreciated.

Gen Con IX as featured here clearly states it is a second edition on the first page. The first edition is likely the tournament copy itself. It is unclear if the same can be said of Gen Con X. More information on this is needed.

The Valparaiso Society is Bob Blake's gaming group in central Indiana. It is also unclear if this society was associated with a larger organization. In the 70's it was more common for large game associations to break into local chapters called 'societies'. For example, Gygax and company's local chapter of the IFW (International Federation of Wargamers) was called Castles and Crusades Society in the very early 70's.

The artwork found on the covers of the Gen Con IX dungeon is perhaps the worst fantasy artwork ever. Note the dragon resting/guarding the opening to the castle...
