Noticed this d20 item....

NM1 The Upside Down Tower d20

I wonder what items are going to be considered collectible later or even now.

Goodman Games has some DCCs that are, though the one that garners the most value so far is: #3.5 The Haunted Lighthouse.
Then of course the limited print run stuff from other companies maybe, or especially if it can appeal to those of previous editions like the DCCs seem to do. Necromancer Games has some products like this.
Course this is all spoken of as of right now, 10-20 years down the road when those who played 3e in their youth begin to collect then who knows what maybe desired. Even now some people won't touch certain TSR settings and you can get most everything in SW, so maybe some 3e settings/companies will be the same way while others just seem to go for crazy amounts of money.

History shall decide Wink

The DCC items are interesting to me. It is almost like they were marketing future collectibles, and the community took to it. Interesting to see how they held up.

Some things I look for that make for ace collectibles would include..

1. Does the item have some kind of special meaning or importance as a gaming item. Such as, the importance of the woodgrain set in rpg history. I cannot think of any such item in 3e or 2e for that matter!

2. Another trait might be is it rare due to happenstance. Very few Jade Hares made it into distribution. Very very few with cover made it into distribution and are highly coveted as a result. These certainly were not engineered to be a collectible.

3. Engineered to be a collectible. You gotta figured MDG and Origins 'collector's editions' were made to be collectibles. It helps they represent the earliest edition of very popular gaming adventures in rpg history. The DCC items Shane mentions falls in this 'engineered' item category.

3. Was it recalled or received some kind of notoriety. An example of this would be the infamous OB3. God, I love those! BTW - What ever happened to the d20 item that was about sex in role playing? Those were widely panned and I think the company might have been dropped by WotC licensing as a result. Are those now considered in this league of collectible?

4. Did it get a poor reception and was it largely scraped only to become a fierce collectible years later? Planescape sketchbook falls under this category. The story goes, Dana sold those himself at conventions and hardly sold any to the public. Now the PS collectors and general collectors alike make this a handsome 2e collectible.

I was shocked to see it go that high... most of the usual suspects in the bidding so it's not new 3rd Ed. collectors making a splash or anything. That'll take another 10 or 20 years to develop.

The sex and D&D d20 books were truly horrid. Did we really need spells to spread STDs? Totally unnecessary and gross IMO, but perhaps collectible in the future...

I think the sex and D&D was an attempt at humor that way-missed the mark. I have yet to see one in person.

I did have that at one point, as well as the Book of Vile Darkness and the Book of Heroic Deeds. Swill.

Well Treasure of Talon Pass (Free RPG Day 4e module) seems hot right now, so maybe something to watch 6 months, a year down the road to see how it still is doing.

Someday in the future (say another 20 or so years) I could see certain items being rare based on "packaging" - such as the Core Books bookcase sets. I am not even sure how many varieties or type of gift packs there were, but I remember being in Barnes and Noble years back (before 3.5 was even out) and seeing the 3.0 PH, MM and DMG together in a slipcase and shrinkwrapped for something like $75.00.

You can imagine that there won't be many of these complete sets available with slipcase and even less still in shrink.

I talked to Robh Ruppel awhile back (he lives right near me) and he was surprised to hear about the value of these. He let me know where I could get some which is good cause it's stupid $$$ trying to go through Ebay. Now if only he would sell me a painting Crying or Very sad
