I just received this info from a professional eBay seller (on the issue of hanger modules):

"when i got them 15 years ago i had hangers on them all. i took them all off and threw them away to save space. i bought 5000+ modules all at once. mass duplicates."

shocked

More news from jim:

"i bought them from a guy that sold at flea markets. it was a long time ago but i am pretty sure that he bought them at a auction for a bankrupted kaybee toy and hobby store. i seem to remember thats what the price stickers were that were on the hangers. not all had hangers when i got them but probably 75% or more did. in retrospect i know now i should have figured out a way to make extra room and kept them all on, i'd probably get a premium. i had 500 to 1000 + of B2 X3 X5 L2 and I4 and SF1 and SF2 when did the initial buy."

This supports my theory, that most, if not all (A)D&D modules have had a hanger version for the toy stores.

Shall I ask him anything else?

Curious to hear how this supports the thinking that all modules had hanging tabs randomly available to them. What other evidence is there?

(I happen to agree with you btw.)
