That's it! The most expensive D&D-related I have ever seen sell:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5200885984

Freakin $3,650 for this original Robert J. Kuntz map. Winner is the Australian improvstone with spivminder and bill7719719 following. invinclibleoverlord makes an amazing 4th place only.

Fear and Loathing on eBay!

I think that is invincibly over-the-top. huh

I would much rather have an original piece of art with that kind of cabbage.

The money that these auctions have drawn in will likely send shockwaves through the former TSR employees. I would look for more of these types of auctions to begin happening.

I absolutely agree. And Paul Stormberg has already established a nice trademark for this kind of business. Not a bad thing to do. Though maybe he should hire someone for packing and mailing the stuff.

The other auctions were heavy, too. Several new names showed up, with very serious bids. Not really collectors, but GREYHAWK afficionados. There was a lot of talk on the Acaeum forum about the RJK auctions.

So the total out on these auctions is $20,000!!

Seriously, there really wasn't anything significant in the auctions from what I seen. What was pretty much sold for much less than some of the other oddities.

I thought the original artwork was nice and at a decent deal. I liked the Domesday Book but it sold for too much I think.

Well. All you have to do is monitoring that stuff.
One day one of those Kuntz'ians wants to sell his stuff.
Then we'll see what is worth Twisted Evil

I think that is a brilliant assessment by Falstaff. I really do think this material will depreciate as it changes hands.

On another note, I started to get goosebumps today thinking about the Gary Gygax auctioning off his personal collection.

I would sell off my daughter for a shot at owning the PHB original cover art.

Honestly, I don't think, Gygax has to sell his stuff for $20,000. From what I've read, his doing pretty well. The Gygax stuff will show up only after his death, and I sincerely hope, that will be in a loooong time from now.

Oh, I dont know. You might be surprised at the willingness of some of these people to move at least parts of their collection for the amount of cash it would bring in.

I am thinking Gygax has at least 100 times the material Kuntz just put up.

Imagine what an Ed Greenwood auction would look like!

I am thinking this could start a landslide of these types of auctions. I think Ralf would make an excellent auctioneer for one or two of these things.

Well need to win in a lottery I think.
Hopefully Ed waits with selling all his hidden boxes of Realmslore a few years.

edit:

and you should monitor all that stuff. would be great to know how such an investment turns out over the course of the years.

I searched the forums here to see if what I am about to post was a repeat, and even though I cannot find it, considering what common knowledge it seems to be I am taking the safe route and just bumping this five-year-old thread (which may actually be a worse idea; who knows?):

Items from Gary Gygax's personal stash are, in fact, going up at this year's Gen-Con Auction. http://www.gencon.com/2010/indy/sm/press/releases/2010/2010.1.18.Press.aspx

The auction is always one of my favorite parts of the convention anyway, and I cannot even imagine how insane the bidding is going to be for even the most insignificant thing they put up. I know I already promised myself I would pay upwards of $50 for, you know, pretty much anything at all the least bit interesting.

"Gary Gygax's favorite sheet protector. Let's start the bidding at ..."
"Ooh, I can totally win this one!"
"$5,000. Do I hear $7,500?"

And I would be willing to bid crazy amounts even if the proceeds were not potentially going to build a memorial statue. I hope they end up raising ten trillion quatloos, or whatever currency it is the kids use these days, for its construction.

(Also, as long as I am posting, I may as well say how genuinely impressed I am by the community you have built up here and the variety of information available)
