LotR games at Noble Knight

They just posted a slew of Lord of the Rings games at www.nobleknight.com, many of which are hard to find. Here is the info from their blog:

"Riddle of the Ring, Fellowship Games

ICE's Riddle of the Ring is a highly sought after game and usually commands a high price at auction. However, before ICE produced the game with greater production values, a company called Fellowship Games first produced this game. It plays exactly like the ICE version where each player takes control of either the hobbits or the black riders and attempts to acquire the ring and take it to either Mount Doom or Barad-dur. The game is rather large at approximately 1 1/2' x 2 1/2' and comes sealed in a plastic bag. The games uses large oversized tarot type cards and colored plastic pieces. The map is printed on durable poster board in color and is protected by a large piece of thick cardboard.

This game is a rare find indeed! A copy of This game sold for $350 at Gencon several years ago!

War of the Ring (UK Edition) (Boxed Game) - This version of War of the Ring has the white Ralph Bakshi box top with the Simpub (UK Edition) logo on it. Ralph Bakshi was the maker of the 1978 animated Lord of the Rings movie. Still in the SHRINKWRAP!

Middle Earth Trilogy - War of the Ring, Gondor & Sauron (Flat Tray) - Gondor & Sauron were originally released as expansions in the folio series. This game includes all three games in one flat tray. The cover sheet is an olive color with the War of the Ring art work (a picture of the Balrog and Gandalf) centered and taking up about 1/2 of the sheet. The art work for the Gondor and Sauron folio games are in the bottom corners on either side. This game is unpunched!

Middle Earth Trilogy - War of the Ring, Gondor & Sauron (Boxed Game) - This version is identical to the flat tray except for it being stored in an olive colored box. The art work on the cover is the same as the flat tray.

War of the Ring (Flat Tray) - This version has a brown cover sheet with the Balrog & Gandalf art work. Still NEW IN THE SHRINK!

Quest of the Magic Ring

Published by Land of Legend, Quest of the Magic Ring is a simple game that uses roll and move mechanics to decide the eventual winner. Due to legal reasons, many of the names were changed. Aragorn is simply called The Ranger, Saruman is the White Wizard, The Cracks of Doom is the Crack of Fire and the list goes on. Shrinkwrapped copy available!!! Bargain priced for its rarity!

The Lord of the Rings Adventure Game

This game was released in 1979 by Milton Bradley and was marketed as a tie-in to the Ralph Bakshi animated movie and features artwork from that movie on the box. Surprisingly rare and hard to find for a mass produced title. The players take on the role of one of the fellowship characters attempting to cast the one ring into the fires of Mount Doom. The cards allow you to do certain things such as move, defeat or bypass monsters or traverse normally impassable terrain. They are even used to steal rings from other players. There are a total of 12 rings that can be collected at various points in the game and may be used to get past opposing creatures. In order to win the game you must have at least one ring remaining when you reach Mount Doom.

The Hobbit Game - The Adventures of Bilbo in Middle-Earth from "The Lord of the Rings"

This is a 3-D children's game released by Milton Bradley in 1977. The artwork is cartoonish and the 3-D style was a very popular set-up for
children's games at that time. The game uses simple roll and move mechanics and the age range for the game is listed as 7-12. A surprisingly rare game for a mass produced title.

The Hobbit Game

This game was released by American Publishing in 1977. It was marketed as "A Thrilling and fast moving game based on Tolkien's masterpiece The Hobbit from the Xerox television special." The cover is from the Rankin Bass Cartoon when Bilbo first sees Smaug. The game starts at Hobbit Hill and the player must traverse one of 4 paths on their way to the gold treasure at Lonely Hill. The players collect the amount of gold shown on that particular path and then return home via the Home Path. There are various adventure and creature cards that a player may encounter on the trail which will have to be dealt with. Players are also able to buy magic pieces in order to help them out. The first player to 200 gold (or the agreed upon amount) wins.

Battle of the Five Armies (TSR)

Battle of the Five Armies was originally produced by a company called Lore. The rights were than sold to TSR who began producing the game with upgraded production values with some minor tweaks to the rules. This is the TSR version and is hex war game depicting the final battle at the end of The Hobbit. We have both the rare boxed edition and the ziplock edition available!

The Ringbearer

The Ringbearer is a set of miniatures rules produced by Little Soldier in 1975 and written by Dan Bress and Ed Konstant. It is illustrated by Wendell Hill. The games consists of 4-10 players controlling one of the various forces of Middle-Earth: Halflings, Dwarves, Elves, Black Riders, Goblins and so on. The object of the game is to deliver the One Ring to the Crack of Darkness. The game is based on The Lord of the Rings with the geographical locations having slight spelling changes such as Myrkwood or Rivergard. We have the tan edition, green edition, and the previously rumored "olive colored" edition, well we can confirm it exists!

Not many copies of any edition exist and this a rare collectible item.

Middle Earth Wargames Rules - Part One, Mordor & The West

This miniatures rulebook was printed in 1976 by Skytrex. From the introduction:

"These rules have been compiled by wargamers in an attempt to create a flowing and successful fantasy wargame. They cover specifically the mythical world, Middle Earth, created by Professor J. R. R. Tolkien in his books The Hobbit, and the trilogy, Lord of the Rings. Originating from a set of notes hastily written, these rules are the final result of the best part of a years research and playtesting.

Most sets of rules designed to cover this facet of wargaming published previously have been modified from the Ancient Period. However these have been written exclusively for the Middle Earth wargamer. This is why they include an extensive section on morale and a unique and totally new system for the working of magic. The rules are for 20mm scale battles fought between the West and the forces of Mordor. Elements such as Saruman, Balrogs and Dragons have been omitted because they are superfluous for this type of battle and would only lengthen the rules."

There and Back Again

There and Back Again is primarily a Single Person (Solitaire) game, but can be played with two players. It is a West Coast Games game for their fantasy adventure game based on 'The Hobbit'. The player attempts to maneuver the company on the playing map to the Lonely Mountain and back again to Rivendell. It is up to you which paths you take and how you handle the encounters.

The game consists of the following:

1 8x10 playing map
1 rule booklet (12 pages long)
1 set of 100 counters (white and yellow) printed on both sides
2 backprinted chart cards (Terrain Effects, Encounter Table, Combat Results, and Combat Card)

This game is extremely rare.

Siege of Barad-Dur

According to the editor’s comments at the beginning of the magazine, this particular issue (# had a print run of only 190. As probably only a few of those have survived, this is one of the rarest Tolkien-related board games. This game is not from LOTR, but from a battle from the Second Age (3430 S.A.) as described in The Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien--although this game was published before the book was published, so the information for this game comes from the appendix found in The Return of the King. The battle depicts the struggle between the Last Alliance between Men and Elves lead by the elf king Gil-Galiad and the high king of men, Elendil, against the resurgence of Sauron and his evil creatures (The Nazgul and Orcs). The rarest title here!

War of the Ring - The Game of Middle Earth

Very rare "long" box game from Fantasy Games Unlimited.

Players command the forces of Gondor and Mordor to decide the fate of Middle Earth. The game involves the quest of the fellowship and the military situation simultaneously.

As the game was not properly licenced, it was quickly pulled from distribution and is, as a result, quite rare.

This game is based on the basic game mechanics of Diplomacy (moves, holds, supports and convoys), but is set in Tolkien's world of Middle Earth. The game is played either by two opponents or four players (two per team, one controlling armies and fleets and one controlling the other individuals). Because the game is intended to be played by two opponents (a person or a team), the one part of the traditional game of Diplomacy that is not preserved in this game is the diplomacy itself.

Despite the lack of negotiations, the basic game mechanics are taken from Diplomacy but with a number of extensions or modifications. Armies and fleets are supported by supply centers, but can have single, double, or triple strength. In addition to armies and fleets, there are a number of characters/roles, such as Gandalf, Strider, The Ringbearer, and the Nazgul, each of which has certain attributes or abilities (for example some characters increase the strength of the army they accompany). There are a variety of special rules regarding terrain, as well as victory points given in special circumstances such as The Ringbearer getting to Mount Doom, a Nazgul with the Ring getting to Barad-Dur, the Ring being captured by Mordor's strongest army, and others.

This is a game for two or three players, designed to simulate the wars illustrated in the book "Lord of the Rings", by J.R.R. Tolkien. The board covers the area of Middle Earth, and all the major races mentioned in the book are included, with emphasis placed on speed of play and enjoyment. The game includes the possibility of all the major battles mentioned in the book. A simple live-or-die combat table is used with no retreats, and zones of control and supply have no part in the game.

Very limited production, extremely rare."
