Scribe's Musings:

Many tidbits of interesting information in this issue. The club news sections makes covering these issues quite a bit more complicated compared to later issues when the club news was split away. At any rate. They announce the club membership has swelled to 250 compared to 53 the year before.

This issue contains part IV of Gary Gygax's ANCIENT MINIATURE RULES article. He cites Tony Bath's RULES OF ANCIENT WARGAMES and RULES FOR MEDIEVAL PERIOD as being used to build upon his rules article.

Len Lakofka writes a report on the 2nd annual LAKE GENEVA CONVENTION held at the Horticulture Hall in Lake Geneva on August 23 and 24. He mentions the convention began with a speech by Gary Gygax followed by an 'auction of wargaming trophies, mementos, games, etc'; auctioneered by John Mansfield. Highlights include: Napoleonics Miniatures game presented by Ray Johnson and Terry Stafford; a WWII tank battle run by Mike Reese and Leon Tucker; Fight in the Skies tournament sponsored by Mike Carr; series of Naval Battles conducted by Tony Morale; Avalon Hill gaming including their new Feudal Wargame; STALENGRAD II run by Mark Goldberg. He mentions an attendance of 268 gamers over the two day event with 68 IFW members in attendance. The event netted $110 for the club.

Society Reports have small bits on the various dedicated societies that focus on a specific period or type of wargaming. The one mention of interest in this issue is the newly formed Ancients Society. It boosts a membership of two. Founding member Tom Webster and Gary Gygax. Tom is mentioned as working on an Atlantis campaign and Gary has a mythical land of Romans and Barbarians set up. Tom's campaign references Arbela as the gaming rules. Medieval campaigns are including under this society in spite of classifying itself as the era before 500AD historically.

Society Report includes a mention of Len Lakofka running the Galactic Federation. An advertisement is run elsewhere in this magazine that is detailed above.

Societies Lists and Rules Committee sub-chairman (as of this issue):
Napoleonic, Civil War, War of the Empires -- Bill McDuffie; Potsdam, NY
Stalingrad -- George Phillies; Cambridge, MA
Bulge -- Jim Hahnenburg; Midland, MI
Galactic Federation -- Len Lakofka; Chicago, IL
WWII Miniatures -- Mike Reese; Harvard, IL
D-Day -- Ken Counselman; Bedford, OH
Anzio -- Joe Alexander; New City, NY
Naval Miniatures -- Tony Morale; Little Neck, NY
Bismarck & Midway -- Sam Ferris; Newberry, MI
Jutland -- Bob Schoolfield; Texarkana, TX
Blitzkrieg -- no president
Fight in the Skies -- Mike Carr; St. Paul, MN
Desert Fox -- Richard Runte; Port Neches, TX
Diplomacy -- Lenard Lakofka; Chicago, IL
Non-Wargames -- Lenard Lakofka; Chicago, IL
Gamescience and 1914 -- no president

Finally, Gygax writes a letter to the editor that is published. He takes a critical exception to the layout of the previous issue while lauding its overall efforts. He offers further criticism of other's gaming articles. I don't recall seeing this type of letter in later issues and I will look for others in earlier issues as I continue down through them.
